Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned against holding elections in his country at the present time, stressing that organizing the electoral process while the war continues could lead to serious political and social repercussions. He also emphasized that it would exacerbate internal divisions. Zelensky explained that elections under the current circumstances could turn into what he described as a political “tsunami” that would engulf Ukraine. He further indicated that electoral competition during wartime could fracture Ukrainian society. Moreover, it could open the door to internal political conflicts at a time when the country is facing significant military and security challenges.
The Ukrainian president added that the current priority is maintaining national unity and strengthening the state’s ability to cope with the consequences of the war. He also noted the difficulty of holding a normal election process while military operations continue and various regions are subjected to shelling.
Zelensky’s remarks come at a time of ongoing debate within Ukraine regarding the future of the political process and elections. This debate persists against the backdrop of the ongoing war with Russia and the exceptional circumstances the country is facing, including security restrictions and the difficulty of ensuring voter participation in areas affected by the fighting. Zelensky emphasized that any elections must be held in conditions that guarantee their integrity and the safety of all participants. He also stressed the importance of preventing political disagreements from becoming an additional factor threatening the cohesion of Ukrainian society while the war continues.
