Tehran, Iran – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei announced that Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will pay an official visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday. This visit is a continuation of ongoing diplomatic and military cooperation between the two countries. Field Marshal Munir, in his capacity as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, previously held productive telephone talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. These talks focused on ways to enhance peace, stability, and security in the West Asia region. They also discussed addressing shared regional challenges.
Pakistani mediation and current international tensions
The visit of the Pakistani army chief to Tehran is of exceptional importance given Islamabad’s active role as a diplomatic mediator between Iran and the United States since the outbreak of the conflict earlier this year, which included the vital Strait of Hormuz crisis. Pakistan has played a prominent role in facilitating a temporary peace agreement and supporting rounds of dialogue. Furthermore, it has helped maintain open channels of communication with all parties involved. Field Marshal Munir has personally participated in many of these diplomatic efforts through previous visits and calls.
American pressure and economic pressure files
These intensive talks come at a time when the region is witnessing increasing reports of potential new US pressure on Tehran, including threats from US Treasury officials of harsher measures and sanctions. The visit is likely to focus on coordinating joint positions and containing the economic and political escalation. Discussions are also expected on the rapidly unfolding international developments related to this pressure.
