Islamabad, Pakistan – Muhammad Khalid, a former aide to the late Pakistani Taliban leader Mullah Nazir, was killed, and another person was injured in a drive-by shooting by unidentified gunmen in the Dawaj area of Wana town in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, western Pakistan. The incident occurred on Saturday evening as the victim and his companion were traveling from Rustam market to their home when they were ambushed by gunmen near a local cemetery.
Rescue sources explained that Khalid was seriously injured and died from his injuries while being transferred to a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan for advanced treatment, while the other injured person was transferred to the district headquarters hospital in Wana to receive the necessary medical care.
For its part, the Pakistani police announced that they had filed a preliminary report and launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances of the attack and determine the motives and identities of the perpetrators, which remain unknown. This incident comes amid escalating security tensions in the Lower South Waziristan region, where local residents have recently suffered from a surge in organized crime, armed attacks, and targeted killings, raising serious concerns and prompting residents to demand that law enforcement agencies strengthen security measures to protect lives and property.
