Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump on Sunday sharply criticized Canada over tariffs. He also renewed his sharp criticism of the nature of trade and economic relations between Ottawa and Washington. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Canada wants all the benefits of being a US state, without actually being one.”
Trump’s criticism didn’t stop there. He accused the Canadian government of imposing unfair tariffs and restrictions on American agricultural products. He explained, “They also imposed massive, high tariffs on our great farmers for many years, and we will not allow that to happen again.” Trump’s fiery remarks come at a time of heightened trade tensions between the two countries and an unprecedented escalation of international tensions.
In response, Canada issued a firm statement. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the United States of using the new policies and tariffs as a tool to “harm and divide” Canada. He described the US measures as a “grave miscalculation.” Carney vowed to retaliate in kind and defend his country’s economy by imposing dollar-for-dollar tariffs starting September 8.
The Canadian Prime Minister announced that Ottawa had officially decided to suspend trade talks with Washington. This came after the US administration presented demands that Canada could not accept. In response, US Trade Representative Jamison Greer stated that Canada had abruptly withdrawn from a nearly finalized trade agreement, which was primarily aimed at reducing tariffs on its exports to the US market.
