  • First president from outside the founding family and a bold strategy
  • Leading the way in hybrid technologies and launching iconic models
  • Extensive global expansion and a legacy that extends beyond the automotive sector.

Tokyo, Japan – One of the most prominent figures who left an indelible mark on the history of modern Toyota has passed away. The Japanese company announced the death of its legendary former president, Hiroshi Okuda, at the age of 93. Although Toyota is today one of the most famous and commercially successful companies in the global automotive industry, its path to the top was neither easy nor guaranteed from the outset.

Toyota has built its prestigious position through bold strategic decisions, pioneering technological innovations, and the crucial contributions of visionary leaders. Perhaps the most prominent figure was Okuda. He played the most decisive role in transforming Toyota into an unrivaled global automotive powerhouse.

First president from outside the founding family and a bold strategy

Okuda took the helm at a particularly turbulent time for the Japanese company. In 1995, he became chairman of the board. This set a historic precedent as the first person from outside the family that had founded Toyota decades earlier. Faced with formidable challenges and the company’s need for fresh direction, Okuda adopted a bold, game-changing growth strategy. He initiated radical reforms to the company’s operations and operational strategy. In addition, he promoted innovative models and invested heavily in the brand’s international expansion to strengthen its global presence.

Leading the way in hybrid technologies and launching iconic models

His golden era saw the introduction and promotion of models that had the most significant and decisive impact on Toyota’s subsequent trajectory, namely the Prius and the RAV4. The Prius formed the solid foundation upon which the company developed and strengthened its global technological leadership in hybrid systems. Meanwhile, the RAV4 helped solidify Toyota’s dominant position in the SUV segment. Okuda is credited with being one of the earliest believers and supporters of hybrid technology. He also foresaw future trends in the global automotive market. Thus, he laid the groundwork for the brand’s successful and sustainable path in the fields of electric and environmentally friendly vehicles.

Extensive global expansion and a legacy that extends beyond the automotive sector.

The late Okuda’s achievements were not limited to the Japanese market. He made tremendous contributions to Toyota’s international expansion by directly overseeing the opening of new factories outside Japan. This strengthened its continued presence in various global markets. This policy yielded remarkable and sustained success, enabling the brand to maintain its position as the world’s most successful commercial vehicle company for many years. Okuda was not only a giant in the automotive industry, but his powerful and influential presence also extended to leading Keidanen, Japan’s largest and most prominent business organization. Consequently, he left behind a vast administrative and economic legacy.
