  • Strict instructions to the Department of Defense and the Pacific Fleet
  • Adherence to national security and openness to mutual compromises

Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow would respond decisively if Western countries dared to seize any Russian merchant ships. Speaking as the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces, Putin warned, in remarks carried by the official Russian news agency TASS, “If these plans are implemented, we will have to respond in kind.” The Russian president emphasized that the scope of this response would not be limited to the areas where Russian ships might be detained. Rather, it would extend “wherever we deem it necessary and appropriate, anywhere, including the area of responsibility of the Pacific Fleet.” He affirmed the readiness of Russian forces to expand the scope of defensive operations to protect maritime navigation.

Strict instructions to the Department of Defense and the Pacific Fleet

In translating these threats into concrete actions on the ground, President Putin instructed Russian sailors and various naval vessels to pay close and careful attention to this serious threat. Additionally, Putin announced that “the relevant instructions have already been issued to the Ministry of Defense, and these instructions have been communicated to the Pacific Fleet command.” Therefore, he stated, “I will await practical proposals in this regard,” clearly indicating an increase in the Russian naval’s readiness level. This is linked to countering any potential Western actions against his country’s merchant fleet.

Adherence to national security and openness to mutual compromises

Despite the escalating military rhetoric and escalating warnings, Putin was careful to emphasize that while his country is striving to strengthen its national security and commercial navigation rights, it remains fully prepared to reach mutually acceptable compromises with its neighbors and partners. The Russian president concluded his remarks by stating, “We are ready to do so on the basis of mutual respect for interests.” This reflects Moscow’s desire to keep the door open to diplomacy alongside a decisive military deterrent.
