Bogota, Colombia – The Colombian government is seeking to alleviate the economic pressures imposed by the devastating earthquake by requesting that US President Donald Trump suspend tariffs on Colombian imports to the United States. This move comes in the wake of the disaster, which caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction. It also comes amid a growing need for additional financial resources to fund relief efforts and the reconstruction of affected areas. Furthermore, there is a pressing need to revive the economic sectors that have suffered losses.

Bogota believes that maintaining tariffs at this stage could increase the burden on businesses and exporters. This is especially true given the decline in economic activity in the devastated areas. Therefore, it is seeking a temporary measure to allow the economy to recover. During a phone call between the two leaders, they discussed the aftermath of the earthquake and Colombia’s needs in the post-disaster period. Trump also expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, affirming his solidarity with the Colombian people.

The Colombian government’s top priority in the coming period is restoring essential services to the affected areas. It is also working to repair damaged infrastructure and provide support to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods. The request to suspend tariffs reflects Bogotá’s attempt to transform its trade relationship with Washington into a tool for overcoming the crisis’s repercussions, rather than allowing the additional tariffs to become a further burden on the economy during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
