Jerusalem, Palestine – The Governor of Jerusalem affirmed that any attempts to impose taxes on churches and church institutions in the city constitute a violation of the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem. He added that such actions also infringe upon religious and historical rights guaranteed by international agreements and conventions.
In a press statement, the Governor explained that churches in Jerusalem enjoy a special legal and historical status that has been respected for decades. He emphasized that any unilateral measures aimed at altering this reality would only exacerbate tensions and undermine the religious and historical character of the Holy City.
He pointed out that imposing taxes on churches not only affects religious institutions but also threatens the humanitarian, educational, and health services these institutions provide to citizens. He emphasized that these measures constitute a dangerous precedent that infringes upon freedom of worship and the rights of religious institutions.
The Governor of Jerusalem called upon the international community and UN bodies to assume their responsibilities and work to protect the historical and legal status quo of the city. He also demanded a halt to any measures that would alter its identity or harm its Islamic and Christian holy sites. He affirmed that preserving the status quo is a fundamental pillar for achieving stability and safeguarding Jerusalem’s religious and human heritage.
