Beirut, Lebanon – The Middle East Council of Churches condemned the aggression against Lebanon, expressing its categorical rejection of any violations of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This comes amidst escalating tensions that threaten internal stability and exacerbate the suffering of its citizens.
In a statement, the Council affirmed that the current situation is worsening the already dire humanitarian and economic conditions in Lebanon. It also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and adherence to international law, in order to safeguard the security of civilians and prevent the region from descending into further violence.
The Council of Churches warned of the dangers of escalating hate speech and incitement, noting that such rhetoric poses a direct threat to the social fabric. It also fuels divisions at a time when the Lebanese people need unity and solidarity.
The statement emphasized the importance of promoting a culture of dialogue and tolerance and working to consolidate the values of coexistence as the only way to overcome the current challenges. It also affirmed that national unity is the first line of defense against these challenges.
