Dhaka, Bangladesh — Members of parliament in Bangladesh elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country’s new president today. Consequently, the veteran Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader assumes the head-of-state role. Alamgir secured a decisive majority during the parliamentary vote. Furthermore, the election reflects a broader political transformation following recent national shifts.
Alamgir Secures Decisive Parliamentary Victory
Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin announced that Alamgir received 255 votes. Consequently, he defeated rival candidate Oli Ahmad, who secured 88 votes. Ahmad ran as the candidate for an 11-party coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami. Furthermore, the BNP and its allies hold a two-thirds parliamentary majority. This majority follows their victory in the general election held on February 12.
Long Political Career and Ceremonial Presidency
The presidency in Bangladesh remains largely a ceremonial role. Consequently, executive power stays with the Prime Minister and the cabinet. However, the President serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned last month due to health reasons. Furthermore, Alamgir served as BNP Secretary-General since 2016. He previously held several cabinet posts, including Minister of Local Government.
Finally, the president-elect will take the official oath of office on Friday evening. Ultimately, the ceremony completes a major political transition for the nation.
