Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentina’s President Javier Pellegrini defended his country’s national team after it faced a barrage of criticism during its participation in the 2026 World Cup. He asserted that the criticism leveled at “La Albiceleste” stemmed from jealousy of its successes.
Argentina finished as runners-up in the 2026 World Cup after losing to Spain 1-0 in the final match held in New Jersey, USA.
Argentina’s journey in the tournament was marked by widespread controversy, fueled by accusations of questionable refereeing decisions. Furthermore, some players engaged in questionable conduct, most notably the altercations that followed the final match against Spain.
Miley posted two pictures on his official Instagram account that carried messages of support for the Argentine national team, in response to the criticism directed at the team.
The first message read: “Our problem is that we are always in the spotlight and cannot be ignored. They envy and are jealous of us, as we excel at almost everything. Someone had to say it… a little common sense, please”.
The second image, generated using artificial intelligence techniques, showed the Argentine president wearing the national team’s jersey, accompanied by the phrase: “Long live Argentina, for hell’s sake”.
Meanwhile, Argentine fans circulated an online petition demanding a replay of the World Cup final against Spain. They justified this demand by claiming that refereeing errors affected the outcome of the match.
The Latin American network Azteca TV reported that the petition garnered over 61,000 signatures from both inside and outside Argentina. It was based on allegations of refereeing bias in favor of the Spanish national team.
