Buenos Aires, Argentina – Anger has been mounting among Argentine fans following their team’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Thousands of fans have since launched an online campaign demanding a rematch, alleging refereeing errors influenced the outcome.
The British newspaper The Mirror reported that more than 82,000 people signed a petition published on Change.org. In the petition, they called on FIFA to review the result of the final and demanded a rematch after a review of the refereeing decisions.
The petitioners indicated that, in their view, Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić made significant errors during the match. Therefore, they called on FIFA to conduct a thorough review of the events and make what they described as a “fair decision”.
Spain won the 2026 World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute of extra time, securing La Roja their second World Cup title.
Following the final whistle, tensions rose between the players of both teams after several altercations broke out on the pitch. This prompted FIFA to open a disciplinary investigation into the events that followed the final, with a view to considering potential sanctions.
In response, another online petition circulated on Change.org calling for Argentina to be banned from future World Cup tournaments. However, it was later shut down.
