Lisbon, Portugal – Portuguese media reports have highlighted the potential repercussions of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the national team. These reports suggest the impact could extend to economic and commercial aspects, not just on the pitch.

Following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 against Spain, the Portuguese captain announced that this would be his final appearance at the tournament. He also indicated that he would make a final decision regarding his international future in the coming period.

The Portuguese news agency Lusa, quoting the executive director of the Portuguese Institute of Marketing Management, reported that Ronaldo represents exceptional marketing value. He explained that his presence gives the Portuguese national team global exposure and increases interest from fans and media around the world.

The report added that Ronaldo’s retirement from international football could impact the Portuguese Football Federation’s commercial revenues. There is also a possibility of a decline in viewership and engagement across digital platforms. Furthermore, some sponsorship agreements linked to the popularity of the Al-Nassr captain may be affected.

He noted that the Portuguese Football Federation has begun preparing for the post-Ronaldo era by giving more opportunities to the new generation. This generation includes João Neves, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Rafael Leão, and Diogo Costa. Furthermore, the Federation is working to strengthen the national team’s collective identity, moving away from dependence on a single star player.

The report concluded by emphasizing that the Portuguese Football Federation’s biggest challenge will not be replacing Ronaldo on the pitch, but also maintaining the marketing and commercial value that the Portuguese captain has brought to the national team over many years.
