  • Jordanian deterrence operation and countering sources of threat

Amman, Jordan – Early Friday morning, the Eastern Military Region of the Jordanian Armed Forces, within its area of responsibility, thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics using guided balloons. These balloons were accurately detected by Jordanian border guard units, who immediately engaged them and downed them along with their cargo within Jordanian territory. This operation was conducted in coordination with security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department. All seized items were transferred to the relevant authorities for further legal action.

Extension of previous border operations

This latest thwarting comes as an extension of the military establishment’s ongoing efforts. Last Tuesday, the Jordanian army announced the foiling of a similar attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotics carried in balloons at the strategic border triangle linking Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. A military statement issued at the time explained that border guard units spotted the balloons at dawn on Tuesday within the area of responsibility of the Eastern Military Region before engaging and downing them inside Jordanian territory. The seized items were then handed over to the relevant judicial and security authorities. In its subsequent statements, the Jordanian army emphasized that its valiant forces will continue to confront all infiltration and smuggling attempts with full force across all border fronts. It affirmed its commitment to utilizing all its operational and intelligence capabilities to preserve the Kingdom’s security, stability, and the safety of its citizens.

Jordanian deterrence operation and countering sources of threat

In a related context, these operations reflect the evolving criminal methods of smuggling gangs. Last May, the Jordanian army announced the execution of “Operation Jordanian Deterrence” at dawn on Sunday, targeting several sites and headquarters of arms and drug traffickers along the Kingdom’s northern border. The military statement at the time indicated that the armed forces, based on precise intelligence, had identified the locations of factories, workshops, and warehouses used by these criminal groups as launching points for their operations. These were then targeted and destroyed with high precision to prevent the flow of drugs and weapons into Jordanian territory.
