Rome, Italy – Italy is experiencing one of the most intense heat waves in recent years, with temperatures soaring to record highs in several cities. As a result, authorities have issued a state of maximum alert in five major cities, amid concerns about the impact of the extreme heat on public health and infrastructure.

The Italian Ministry of Health has raised the alert level to its highest point in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Turin, and Brescia, with high temperatures expected to persist in the coming days. Authorities have warned that the current weather conditions could pose a risk to all age groups, particularly the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses.

The current heatwave is due to a hot air mass dominating large parts of southern Europe. This has led to significantly higher temperatures than usual for this time of year. Weather forecasts indicate that the hot conditions will persist, with the possibility of new record highs in some areas.

Meanwhile, electricity grids are facing increasing pressure due to the surge in air conditioning and cooling usage. This has resulted in increased loads on the grid. Some cities have experienced power outages and disruptions, while energy companies are working to enhance network readiness to prevent any widespread failures.

Italian authorities have taken a number of precautionary measures to cope with the heatwave, including opening air-conditioned public centers to accommodate citizens and providing free water points in squares and public spaces. Residents have also been advised to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours and to drink plenty of water.

Climate experts confirm that Europe has witnessed a significant increase in extreme heatwaves in recent years. This poses growing challenges to the health, energy, and infrastructure sectors, amid warnings that extreme weather events could become more frequent in the coming years.
