Highlights
  • Outdated or insecure technologies
  • Strengthening authentication and encryption mechanisms

London, UK – Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a vulnerability in SIM card technology, raising concerns that it could be exploited to launch attacks targeting mobile phone users without requiring physical access to their devices.

The vulnerability highlights the risks associated with the software and technologies embedded within SIM cards.

These technologies perform a range of functions related to network and communication services.

They also facilitate data exchange with mobile operators.

Outdated or insecure technologies

According to researchers, certain vulnerabilities in the SIM card environment can be exploited

if the chip or its software components use outdated

or insufficiently secured technologies. This could open the door to unauthorized access to certain functions.

The danger of this type of vulnerability lies in the fact that the user may not notice any unusual activity on their phone,

especially if the exploitation attempt is made through the infrastructure connected to the communication networks.

For this reason, updating security systems and network components becomes crucial.

Strengthening authentication and encryption mechanisms

Cybersecurity experts have called on telecommunications companies and chip manufacturers

to review the systems used in SIM cards and close the discovered vulnerabilities.

They also urged them to strengthen authentication and encryption mechanisms

to prevent their exploitation in attacks targeting subscribers.

These developments underscore that mobile phone security depends not only

on the device’s operating system or installed applications,

but also on the SIM card, the network, and the software components running in the background.
