Berlin, Germany – The German armed forces have recorded a significant and noticeable increase in the number of drone sightings in recent years. This surge has been influenced by escalating regional tensions in Europe. A spokesperson for the German operational command revealed in a press statement to the RND media group, published on Wednesday, that they have received hundreds of credible reports of suspected drone flights over German military bases and barracks. In addition, other sensitive military sites have reported incidents.
The same spokesperson explained that the rates of detection of these aircraft have witnessed a qualitative and sharp jump since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022. What is worrying and of security interest is that these rates have remained at record high and constant levels throughout the past years. Moreover, these levels continue up to the present time.
Nature and forms of observed drones
Further details regarding the nature of these flights indicate that the vast majority involved individual, remotely piloted drones, possibly for reconnaissance or intelligence purposes. However, the incidents were not limited to single drones. On multiple occasions, entire, coordinated swarms of drones were reported flying over specific critical and military installations. This reinforces the likelihood of organized and systematic reconnaissance operations aimed at gathering precise intelligence on the country’s defense infrastructure.
Radical shift in the security environment and hybrid threats
Strategically, the spokesperson for the operational command emphasized that the overall security environment in Germany and across Europe has undergone a radical and profound transformation recently. The military official stressed that the German army and state now face hybrid and complex threats on a daily basis. In addition to traditional military espionage, these threats include new forms of risk such as disinformation campaigns aimed at influencing public opinion and destabilizing the country.
Cyberattacks targeting communication networks and critical infrastructure, as well as systematic espionage activities aimed at monitoring military movements and the country’s defense capabilities, are among the threats. Potential acts of sabotage targeting vital facilities to disrupt national capabilities are also included. These developments present German security and defense authorities with unprecedented challenges. Therefore, these challenges necessitate strengthening short-range air defense systems. More robust protection of the airspace above sensitive military sites is also required.
