Tripoli, Libya – A power substation south of the city of Zawiya in western Libya was attacked by a drone. The attack caused significant damage to the substation and sparked fires, according to the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL). GECOL stated that the damage rendered the substation completely offline, resulting in power outages in several areas surrounding Zawiya.

The company warned of the repercussions of continued attacks on electricity infrastructure. It emphasized that repeated attacks could exacerbate the electricity crisis and lead to partial or widespread power outages in several regions. Furthermore, the security situation has disrupted the work of technical maintenance teams, hindering efforts to bring offline generating units back online. This further strains the country’s electricity grid.

The attack comes amid escalating security tensions in western Libya. There are also concerns about a wider targeting of vital infrastructure, which could directly impact basic services and the lives of citizens. Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage caused by the attack. No group has yet officially claimed responsibility for the attack on the power station.
