Washington, DC – In a dramatic and shocking turn of events, Cole Allen, a 31-year-old with a brilliant academic career in computer science, went from being a designer of virtual reality shooting games to a suspect in a real-life assassination attempt targeting US leaders.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton Hotel, led to the hasty evacuation of President Donald Trump and other top officials. It has left behind complex questions about the motives of the “high-achieving teacher” who terrified the nation’s capital.
“Exceptional” academic career and military leanings
According to the FBI investigation and his LinkedIn profile, Allen has an impressive academic record. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering and earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University in 2025. His achievements extend beyond his studies, including a research fellowship at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He also built offensive and defensive robotic systems during his undergraduate studies.
Allen’s fascination with digital violence was evident in his development of complex video games such as “First Law” and “Bohrdom.” These games rely on space combat, physics, and a “bullet hell” simulation. Ironically, Allen, who was honored by C2 Education as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024 in Torrance, is the same man who stormed a security checkpoint while heavily armed.
A night of gunfire at the Washington Hilton
U.S. Attorney General Jeanine Pirro explained that Allen breached a Secret Service security perimeter and shot directly at an officer, who was miraculously saved by his own bulletproof vest. Although agents returned fire, Allen was unharmed. He was then apprehended face down, a photo of which was later shared by President Trump on TruthSocial.
Politically, Federal Election Commission records revealed that Allen made a symbolic donation ($25) to Kamala Harris in 2024. However, he remained registered as an “unaffiliated” voter.
In a press conference following the incident, President Trump described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and “a very sick individual.” He also praised the bravery of the Secret Service.
The charges and the future of the investigation
Allen currently faces two serious federal charges: using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal employee with a dangerous weapon, with the possibility of additional charges, including attempted murder.
As the investigation continues, investigators are focusing on examining his software and video game output, searching for clues that might explain how this “engineering mind” went from building robots and tutoring to carrying out one of the most serious security attacks in the history of Washington, D.C.
