The threat level has been raised to “severe”.
This diplomatic warning comes after British authorities raised the country’s terrorism threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” the second-highest level on the UK’s security scale.
According to intelligence assessments, this classification means that a terrorist attack is now “highly likely” within the next six months.
Reasons for concern: Hardliners and far-right extremists
The US Embassy explained in its statement that the recent increase in risks stems from a “rise in threats” emanating from multiple fronts, including extremist groups and far-right elements within Britain.
Observers believe that this diversity of threat sources poses exceptional challenges for security services in pursuing lone cells or organized groups. The decision to raise the threat level last Thursday followed an “anti-Semitic” stabbing attack in north London earlier this week. This incident has sparked a wave of concern about the rise in hate crimes and ideologically motivated violence on British streets.
Precautionary measures and expectations
This heightened security presence coincided with an increased police presence at shopping centers, transport hubs, and major tourist sites in London and other major cities.
While the British government is attempting to reassure the public, intelligence coordination with Washington suggests the seriousness of the information available regarding potential plots.
It is worth noting that Britain operates a five-level threat system, assessed by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC).
A move to the “severe” level would place significant strain on security resources. At the same time, the country is experiencing political and social polarization, which extremists are exploiting to advance their agendas. Consequently, the coming months will be a true test of the UK’s security and stability.
