Washington, DC – Google has officially announced that its Gemini smart assistant app has surpassed one billion monthly active users. This marks a historic milestone. It makes Gemini the fastest app of any Google product or service to reach this astronomical figure. Gemini’s achievement comes just five months after it reached 750 million users in February. It then climbed to 950 million users by the end of July. This reflects a remarkable surge in usage and global adoption.
Gemini’s power on iPhone and Android
In a post on the social media platform X, Josh Woodward, head of Gemini at Google, confirmed that over 100 million users rely on the app via their iPhones. The vast majority of active users remain on Android devices, as the app is pre-installed and integrated into the system. Although its main competitor, ChatGPT, had previously reached the one billion user mark, Gemini’s growth rate has been remarkably rapid. Notably, Google Assistant needed only about two months to jump from 900 million to one billion users. In contrast, its main competitor took four months in previous periods.
Diverse usage patterns: Dominance of voice commands and student interaction
Google data indicates that user interaction with Gemini is taking on advanced and diverse forms. Voice interaction is the most common method among app users, accounting for up to 63%. The company plans to add more than 60 new local dialects soon to expand its user base. Furthermore, one in five users relies on Gemini Live. This feature allows for the sharing of real-time visual content via the phone’s camera. For example, users employ this feature to understand their surroundings or share live screenshots.
In the education sector, Gemini has become an essential companion for students; the app’s director noted that 38% of inquiries related to research and assignments are accompanied by files or images. This coincides with Google’s preparations to launch advanced educational tools for the back-to-school season. Image generation and design have also proven highly effective. The smart assistant facilitates the creation of over 150 million images daily for users worldwide.
