Washington, DC – Democratic members of the US Senate have called for an urgent and thorough investigation into the harsh living conditions and deteriorating situation aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. These demands follow press reports revealing severe food shortages and plumbing problems. The reports also highlighted a serious decline in the mental health of the crew. Notably, this decline occurred during what has been described as the longest deployment in modern naval history.
An official letter from the Minister of Defense reveals details of the violations.
In this context, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a strongly worded letter to US Secretary of Defense Pete Higseth. In the letter, he demanded that the Navy leadership provide immediate and transparent explanations regarding the situation on board the ship. Blumenthal pointed out that the aircraft carrier had been deployed for more than 250 days. In addition, it had spent more than 200 consecutive days at sea without docking at any port. As a result, this set a negative record for the number of consecutive days a naval vessel had spent on arduous operational missions without rest.
The senator explained in his letter that the reports received indicate widespread problems including:
A severe shortage of basic supplies and food.
Water pollution and widespread plumbing problems within the ship’s facilities.
Serious concerns regarding deck safety and hazardous working conditions.
Harsh conditions and widespread anger among sailors’ families
The USS Abraham Lincoln departed from San Diego, California, on November 21, 2015, with its primary mission being the South China Sea. However, its strategic course was altered toward the Middle East in light of recent military developments. Moreover, the US-Israeli strikes against Iran began on February 28, and these actions influenced the ship’s redirection.
This sudden change in mission and the extension of their time at sea has sparked anger and resentment among the sailors’ families. The families of 5,000 sailors and Marines expressed their outrage at the inhumane conditions their loved ones are facing. Additionally, they demanded a firm timetable for their safe return home.
Mental health crises sound the alarm
In addition to the food and service crises, reports have highlighted a more distressing aspect: the deteriorating mental health of the ship’s crew.
Eyewitness accounts describe acute mental health issues and sporadic suicide attempts on board. This situation places grave moral and legal responsibilities on the Pentagon and the U.S. Navy.
