Asia – The Asian continent faces an unprecedented seasonal threat, with the latest scientific and climatological forecasts indicating that the Northwest Pacific is on track for the most intense and destructive hurricane season in recorded history. The El Niño weather phenomenon continues to intensify rapidly. According to estimates from the UK-based company Tropical Storm Risk, published by Bloomberg, the number of tropical storms is expected to increase by up to 60% compared to the long-term historical average. The total number of storms expected in the region is projected to reach approximately 20.
Of these storms, 13 are expected to reach extreme severity. The average number of storms per season over the past ten years is approximately 14.2, of which 8.4 are severe. It should be noted that the region has already experienced three devastating Category 5 storms, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale, as of August 1st.
Destructive paths threaten East and Southeast Asian countries
All eyes are on the Asian coast, as climate models indicate that storms forming in the northwestern Pacific are on a path toward land. This places several countries in immediate danger, including China, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This intense activity is attributed to a confluence of climatic factors. Adam Lea, an expert at the Tropical Storm Hazard Center, stated that a strong El Niño phenomenon continues to develop throughout the summer and fall. Furthermore, this phenomenon acts as a catalyst, amplifying the storms’ energy.
He added that trade winds have reached their lowest levels in over 60 years, coinciding with record-breaking Pacific Ocean surface temperatures. This creates an extremely violent interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere. As a result, an ideal environment for the formation of powerful cyclones is set. The cyclone season in Asia officially runs from June to October. However, the current exceptional conditions suggest the possibility of devastating storms occurring outside this traditional timeframe.
Global climate contradictions and the devastating repercussions of the “El Niño” phenomenon
In contrast, the Atlantic basin is experiencing different climatic behavior; forecasts indicate a less severe than usual season due to increased wind shear and drier air caused by the same El Niño effects. Nevertheless, the overall global picture of the phenomenon appears extremely serious. This year’s El Niño is expected to be the strongest in nearly 80 years. This is causing a radical disruption to global weather patterns. As a result, temperatures are being pushed to new record highs, and a direct threat to global food security arises.
In the same vein, Chris Funk, director of the Climate Risk Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, warned of the early repercussions of the phenomenon, whose severe negative effects began to appear as early as the middle of the year. The Ethiopian highlands experienced their worst drought in four decades. Meanwhile, India recorded its fifth driest June since modern records began in 1901.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned of an 81% chance that El Niño will reach “very strong” intensity between October and December 2026. It explained that temperatures in key Pacific Ocean regions are expected to rise at least 2 degrees Celsius above normal at its peak. This significantly increases the risk of extreme heat waves and devastating wildfires worldwide.
