  • Field challenges and changing infiltration methods of criminal gangs

Baghdad, Iraq – As part of its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, the Iraqi National Security Service announced a significant security achievement on Thursday. This achievement involved dismantling an international drug smuggling network and seizing approximately 20 kilograms of marijuana. These results came from a high-profile operation conducted in coordination with a neighboring country.

The agency explained in an official statement that the Kirkuk Governorate Narcotics Affairs Directorate successfully dismantled the network and thwarted their plans to smuggle these drugs into the country. They also worked to expand their criminal activities within Iraq. This operation was the culmination of weeks of meticulous and intensive intelligence gathering. The gathering aimed at identifying and tracking the network members’ movements and their cross-border connections.

Strategic shift: Iraq is an active partner in pursuing smuggling gangs

This qualitative operation reflects the growing transformation in Iraq’s security role, a shift confirmed by field and operational indicators. For example, the joint operations conducted in April 2026 between Baghdad and Damascus in the Damascus and Homs countryside resulted in the arrest of four key figures involved. Thus, Iraq has become a genuine and active partner in dismantling international smuggling networks. This marks a move beyond its previous status as a mere “safe passage” or a state scapegoated for accusations of border negligence.

Conversely, reports and research from specialized organizations such as XCEPT indicate the continued existence of major challenges related to the control exerted by certain groups and factions over some Syrian-Iraqi border crossings. These factions are also exploiting the situation to smuggle narcotics such as Captagon into the Gulf markets. Consequently, security authorities face a heightened responsibility to promote absolute transparency. It is crucial to transform the border into a platform for constructive regional cooperation, rather than allowing it to become a primary route for smuggling.

Field challenges and changing infiltration methods of criminal gangs

Iraqi security forces recognize that the fight against drugs continues to face complex obstacles, as smugglers constantly employ evolving tactics to evade detection. Their methods range from infiltrating rugged desert terrain to using official commercial trucks. Furthermore, they devise sophisticated methods of concealment across border crossings.

In the face of these transnational threats, Iraqi security institutions are developing advanced deterrence and monitoring mechanisms. These mechanisms aim to dismantle organized crime networks and reaffirm the state’s ability to assert its sovereignty. Emphasis is also placed on protecting public safety from the dangers of the arms trade. These efforts come amidst ongoing calls for enhanced regional and international intelligence cooperation. Authorities are striving to eradicate this scourge at its roots.
