Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step toward defusing tensions in the Middle East. This came during a high-level meeting Macron held with his defense advisors. Members of his government also participated in the meeting to discuss the security implications of the agreement.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that President Macron, while welcoming the ceasefire, expressed deep concern about the situation on the ground in the region, emphasizing that “the situation in Lebanon remains critical” and requires urgent international action. Macron stressed the need for Lebanon to be formally and explicitly included in the terms of this agreement to guarantee its stability and protect it from any future escalation. He also noted that regional security is indivisible.
Macron’s call comes at a sensitive time, coinciding with preparations for the anticipated Islamabad talks between Tehran and Washington. Paris believes that including Lebanon in the US-Iranian understandings is a safeguard against the collapse of the temporary truce. Furthermore, it is seen as a guarantee that Lebanese territory will not become an alternative arena for regional conflicts. The Élysée Palace hopes that these developments will pave the way for comprehensive political solutions that will end the state of attrition the region has been experiencing for months. The Élysée Palace has reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and stability in light of these rapidly evolving circumstances.
