Berlin, Germany – German automakers experienced a notable decline in their sales within the Chinese market during the second quarter of 2026. This downturn is attributed to China’s economic slowdown and escalating competition from local manufacturers, particularly in the electric vehicle sector, which has negatively impacted the global performance of major European groups.
Significant Sales Drop
Recent financial data revealed a sharp decline in sales for Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW in China between April and June 2026. Volkswagen Group recorded the largest drop, with a 36.6% year-on-year decrease. Marco Schubert, a member of the Volkswagen Group’s extended executive committee for sales, stated that the Chinese market remains challenging. He noted that the company could not escape the overall market contraction of around 20%, despite initial positive momentum from newly launched, locally developed electric models.
Local Competition Pressures European Firms
German brands are facing waning appeal among Chinese consumers, who increasingly favor vehicles equipped with advanced digital technologies and smart systems. This shift has strengthened the presence of local companies that offer alternatives more aligned with current market demands. While German automakers are attempting to expand their range of electric vehicles tailored for the Chinese market, analysts indicate that local rivals continue to innovate and progress at a faster pace.
Global Performance Implications
German companies have been unable to offset their losses in China through other markets, as the steep decline in Beijing contributed to a drop in total global sales for the three groups: Volkswagen’s global deliveries fell by 8.6%, Mercedes-Benz by 8%, and BMW by 4.9%. These results increase pressure on the profitability of the European automotive sector, which is also contending with structural challenges and global economic headwinds, including rising operating costs and the impact of geopolitical tensions on supply chains and global demand.
