Bamako, Mali – A Tuareg-led rebel group launched simultaneous attacks on several towns in northern and central Mali. These attacks targeted areas where government forces and Russian troops are deployed.
This represents a new escalation in the challenges facing the military government amid a deteriorating security situation in the country.
Attack on Anefis and an army camp
The Azawad Liberation Front (MNLA) announced that its fighters attacked the town of Anefis in the Kidal region of northeastern Mali,
where government forces and elements of the Russian-backed Africa Legion are stationed.
Residents and local officials also reported hearing gunfire and explosions in the central city of Gao.
An army camp there was attacked with rockets and firearms, but no group has claimed responsibility.
Escalation after April attacks
This escalation follows a series of large-scale attacks in Mali last April.
These attacks targeted the capital’s airport, Bamako, and several military bases,
and resulted in the assassination of the defense minister.
The Azawad National Liberation Front and elements linked to al-Qaeda seized control of the city of Kidal.
Malian forces, supported by Russian elements, have since redeployed in the region.
Growing security challenges
The recent attacks reflect the ongoing security challenges facing Malian authorities amid escalating activity
by armed and separatist groups, particularly in the north of the country and the Sahel region.
The overlapping movements of rebels and extremist organizations
further complicate the security landscape and threaten a new wave of military escalation.
