Islamabad, Pakistan – The northwestern Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa awoke Sunday to a horrific toll of violence following a surge in terrorist attacks targeting security forces. The death toll from a suicide bombing targeting a checkpoint and police station in the Fateh Khel district of Bannu, near the Afghan border, has risen to 12 police officers. Eight others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Details of the suicide attack in Bannu
The tragedy began Saturday night when a suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives rammed into the entrance of the police station. The resulting massive explosion caused the entire roof of the building to collapse, burying dozens under the rubble.
Following the bombing, militants launched a coordinated attack using machine guns and drones. The ensuing firefight with security forces lasted for more than two hours, a testament to the ferocity of the terrorist plot and the scale of the weaponry employed.
Security sources reported that the successive explosions not only destroyed the center but also caused extensive damage to surrounding civilian areas. This sparked panic and terror among local residents, who were gripped by an atmosphere of war. Sajjad Khan, the Bannu regional police chief, personally led the security operations and the field response. The area was cordoned off, and rescue teams began a painstaking search under the rubble to recover victims.
Emergency and medical alert
Following the incident, authorities declared a state of maximum alert at all three hospitals in the region. Emergency management officials explained that the injured, including civilians who happened to be near the site, were transferred to intensive care units. There are serious concerns that the death toll could rise due to the critical condition of some of the wounded.
It is worth noting that these developments come just one day after another incident in Bannu. In that incident, a quadcopter drone exploded in a residential area, injuring eight people, including women.
Survival of a patrol in “Lucky Marwat”
In a related incident, a security team from the Dadewala police station in the Lakki Marwat district narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday night. Police spokesman Qudratullah Khan explained that terrorists belonging to the so-called “Kharijite separatist movement” (the banned Pakistani Taliban) attacked the patrol with sophisticated weapons in the Kurum Bar area.
The police bravely returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee. A large-scale search operation, supported by armored personnel carriers, was subsequently launched to pursue the fugitives.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion strongly points to the Pakistani Taliban and its allies, who have intensified their attacks against security forces and members of the jirga (tribal councils) in recent months.
These recurring incidents underscore the scale of the security challenges facing Pakistan in its border regions. This situation has prompted security forces to increase checkpoints and field operations to disrupt armed networks seeking to destabilize the region and drain security resources.
