Dubai, UAE – The aircraft carrying Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made an emergency landing on Sunday evening at Ankara Airport after suffering a technical problem. This occurred while en route to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. According to press reports citing informed sources, the event was unexpected.

Sánchez was traveling to Armenia to take part in the eighth summit of the “European Political Community.” However, the aircraft crew decided to change the flight path and land in the Turkish capital. This was in line with safety procedures followed in such cases.

According to available information, there were no reports of injuries or any immediate danger to passengers. Meanwhile, the relevant authorities handled the incident as a technical fault. This required a temporary stop until the problem was resolved. Spanish reports indicated that the aircraft had taken off from Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base near Madrid. It was forced to land in Ankara.

Ankara Becomes an Emergency Stop in Sánchez’s Diplomatic Trip

The unscheduled landing caused a sudden change to the Spanish prime minister’s agenda. As a result, Sánchez and his delegation were expected to spend the night in Ankara before resuming their journey to Yerevan. This would occur after the aircraft was inspected and the technical issue fixed.

Sánchez’s visit to Armenia comes as part of broader European participation in a summit. The summit aimed at discussing political cooperation, security, and stability across Europe and its surrounding regions. According to Spanish media, the summit is being held under the theme “Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe.”

The summit carries particular importance as European countries seek to strengthen coordination with neighboring states, especially in the Caucasus region. Notably, this region has witnessed growing diplomatic activity in recent years. Furthermore, Sánchez had received an invitation to attend the summit from European Council President António Costa. He was also invited by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Although the technical fault disrupted the trip, the decision to land in Ankara reflects the priority given to safety procedures on official flights. This is especially important when a senior government official and an accompanying delegation are on board. Initial reports did not indicate that Sánchez’s participation in the summit had been canceled. Instead, his arrival in Yerevan had been delayed pending the completion of the necessary technical arrangements.

The incident highlights the sensitivity of official air travel, where any technical fault, even if described as limited, can lead to a complete change in a flight’s route. In this case, Ankara became an emergency stop on Sánchez’s way to Armenia. He awaited the resumption of the journey and the continuation of his diplomatic agenda.
