Rabat – The atmosphere of the “African Lion 2026” maneuvers has shifted into a state of maximum emergency following the reported disappearance of two U.S. soldiers during field exercises in the Kingdom of Morocco. Obviously, by May 2026, the Tan-Tan region is witnessing a massive joint search and rescue operation. The two soldiers vanished near a rugged rocky cliff during combat drills, prompting the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces and AFRICOM to mobilize all technical and human resources to locate them despite the challenging terrain.
“Race Against Time”: Moroccan and U.S. Forces Scour Tan-Tan Coasts and Mountains
Military sources reported that the incident occurred last Saturday; accordingly, joint rescue teams supported by helicopters, naval units, and specialized ground forces were formed. Clearly, the search efforts are not limited to Moroccan and U.S. personnel but involve other participating nations. Efforts are currently concentrated around the rocky area where the soldiers were last seen, amidst hopes of finding them despite the hazardous nature of the training site.
“Open Investigation”: Did the Terrain Cause the Accident?
AFRICOM confirmed in an official statement that the incident is under rigorous investigation to determine its circumstances, while Moroccan authorities continue to coordinate efforts to cover all possibilities. As a result, the international community is closely monitoring updates on the soldiers’ fate, especially since “African Lion” is Africa’s premier military event for enhancing readiness. Amidst this uncertainty, questions remain regarding safety limits in complex military drills, pending the results of official probes.
