WhatsApp has announced the launch of a new security feature aimed at strengthening user protection against fraud and unknown messages by providing additional information and warnings before starting conversations with unknown contacts. This step is part of the ongoing efforts by the Meta-owned app to develop privacy and security tools, in light of the rising cybersecurity scams targeting messaging apps worldwide.
Smart Tools for Identity Verification
The new feature is designed to give users a better chance to verify the identity of the other party before entering into any conversation or sharing personal information. Under the new update, users will see a notification containing additional details about accounts contacting them for the first time, including the account’s creation date in some cases and indicators that help assess the sender’s reliability, alongside reminders not to share sensitive data or financial information with unknown parties.
Rapid Blocking and Reporting Options
The platform will also provide quick options to block or report an account directly from the first conversation screen, without the need to navigate between different menus. This contributes to faster handling of suspicious messages and reduces the chances of users falling victim to fraud.
Countering Sophisticated Tactics
Cybersecurity experts view these measures as an important step to counter the sophisticated methods relied upon by scammers, especially with the use of artificial intelligence technologies to create more persuasive and targeted messages. WhatsApp has recently been expanding its protection ecosystem within the app by adding multiple features, including checking suspicious links, enhancing privacy tools, and providing additional layers of protection for accounts.
Gradual Rollout
The new feature is expected to be rolled out gradually to app users on Android and iOS in the coming period, as part of a series of updates focusing on raising the level of security and trust in using instant messaging services.
