Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that Iran is the only country supporting the imposition of fees on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in this vital waterway,
noting that a significant portion of the world’s energy supply passes through it.
US position on navigation in Hormuz
Rubio stated that his country sees no international support for proposals to impose fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
He also noted that the international community adheres to the principle of freedom of navigation
and opposes imposing additional restrictions or burdens on international maritime trade.
He added that the United States continues to work with its regional and international partners to ensure maritime security.
He affirmed the continued stability of trade and energy flows through strategic waterways, most notably the Strait of Hormuz.
The importance of the strait to the global economy
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea lanes in the world.
Large quantities of oil and gas pass through it, destined for global markets.
For this reason, it makes it a key focus in global energy security and the stability of international markets.
Any developments related to the Strait are of particular importance to energy importing countries.
This is due to the link between navigation traffic and global supply chains.
Calls to preserve free trade
Rubio’s remarks come at a time of growing international calls to maintain the free flow of maritime traffic.
He also stressed the need to ensure that these routes are not subject to any restrictions that could affect global trade or energy supplies.
The US Secretary of Defense affirmed that his country will continue to support efforts aimed at protecting international sea lanes.
Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of enhancing security and stability in the region,
thereby ensuring the continued flow of maritime traffic in accordance with applicable international laws and customs.
