Beijing – The Chinese Ministry of Defense described Taiwan’s annual military exercises, known as “Han Kuang,” as an “empty show,” accusing authorities in Taipei of stoking panic and war fears. Consequently, Defense Ministry spokesperson Chen Shi criticized the ruling Democratic Progressive Party for turning urban areas into battlefields and exposing civilians to potential conflict lines.

Furthermore, the 10-day maneuvers simulated breaking a potential naval blockade and included measures such as throttling mobile internet speeds to handle wartime scenarios. Additionally, Beijing reiterated that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) remains on high alert to counter foreign intervention and separatist movements.

Taiwan’s position and the protection of the democratic system

On the other hand, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te affirmed that efforts to bolster national defense and societal resilience will continue unabated as the drills reach their conclusion. Additionally, he emphasized that government and military cooperation remains vital to preserving Taiwan’s democratic system and maintaining stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Consequently, while Beijing maintains a preference for “peaceful reunification” alongside refusal to renounce force, Taipei insists that its people alone possess the right to decide their future. Ultimately, these annual drills serve to demonstrate Taiwan’s readiness against daily Chinese military maneuvers surrounding the island.

Finally, the rhetoric surrounding the “Han Kuang” exercises highlights ongoing geopolitical friction across East Asia. Ultimately, defense preparedness and strategic restraint will remain decisive factors in determining cross-strait peace.
