  • “The Iranian Bet”: Will Lebanon Become a Card in Washington-Tehran Negotiations?

Beirut – An extensive report by Reuters has uncovered the “catastrophic” losses sustained by Lebanon’s Hezbollah due to recent confrontations with Israel, which resulted in the occupation of parts of southern Lebanon and the systematic destruction of its military capabilities. Obviously, by May 2026, the group is facing unprecedented pressure. Alongside battlefield losses, opposition voices in Beirut have intensified, with political rivals arguing that Hezbollah’s insistence on its arsenal has become a “magnet” for recurring wars that destroy Lebanon’s future.

“The Shocking Figures”: Estimates of Thousands of Fighters Killed Amidst Ambiguous Tolls

Security and medical sources reported that the situation in the south has become “tragically complex.” Unofficial estimates suggest several thousand Hezbollah fighters have been killed, while medical records show over 2,600 deaths since the beginning of last March, including civilians and paramedics. Accordingly, the actual number of Hezbollah fatalities remains shrouded in ambiguity as they are not fully included in official statistics. Clearly, the group is experiencing human and military “attrition” amidst continuous Israeli airstrikes that target both the frontlines and strategic depth.

“The Iranian Bet”: Will Lebanon Become a Card in Washington-Tehran Negotiations?

The agency quoted Hezbollah officials stating a conviction that the only way out is to inject Lebanon into the regional negotiation track between the U.S. and Iran. As a result, the group seeks to impose a “stable ceasefire” formula under international sponsorship to ensure it can reorganize its ranks. Meanwhile, intermittent border battles continue, raising questions about the group’s ability to sustain this path while its supporters face displacement and ruin, placing the “Axis of Resistance” before its toughest test in years.
