Paris – The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Paris’s refusal to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Syrian Golan Heights, emphasizing that its stance regarding the territory’s legal status remains unchanged. Consequently, these statements highlight France’s firm adherence to international law and principles governing territorial sovereignty and integrity.

Furthermore, the French Foreign Ministry noted that its position is rooted in UN Security Council measures, most notably UN Security Council Resolution 497 passed in 1981, which declared Israel’s imposition of its laws and jurisdiction null and void. As a result, France maintains that the Golan Heights remains occupied Syrian territory under international consensus.

Strategic Importance and Future Settlement Dynamics

On the other hand, the Golan Heights holds immense geopolitical significance due to its elevated vantage point overlooking key regions, alongside its vital water resources and security assets. Additionally, unilateral administrative actions taken since 1981 continue to spark international debate and calls for compliance with international legitimacy frameworks.

Consequently, France’s position reinforces the broader European commitment against recognizing unilateral border alterations implemented by force. Ultimately, Paris aims to safeguard multilateral frameworks and preserve viable parameters for future peace negotiations.

Finally, the French announcement underscores long-standing opposition to altering the legal standing of territories occupied in 1967. Ultimately, adherence to international law and United Nations resolutions will dictate any sustainable framework for regional stability.
