Nairobi – Kenya is experiencing a tragic situation as severe weather conditions intensify. The Kenyan police announced that the death toll from floods and landslides has risen to 18. Obviously, by May 2026, the country is facing one of the most violent rain waves in its current season, leading to widespread destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of hundreds. Fears remain that the casualty count will rise as rain continues to batter mountainous regions and dangerous slopes.
“Beneath the Rubble”: Landslides Tear Through Kenyan Counties
Police reports clarified that the disaster was concentrated in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu counties, where water-saturated soil caused sudden landslides that buried homes and property. Accordingly, roads have been cut off, and reaching those affected poses a massive challenge for rescue teams. Clearly, the intensity of the rain this year has exceeded normal levels, causing fragile infrastructure in those areas to collapse under the force of the sweeping floods.
“Peak Danger”: Authorities Mobilize Against the “Season of Death”
Officials believe that Kenya is currently at the heart of the peak rainy season (March – May), which portends further natural disasters if the current situation persists. As a result, authorities have issued stern warnings to residents in mountainous areas regarding immediate evacuation and avoiding flood paths. Amidst this grim scene, relief teams continue their attempts to provide aid to the displaced. The question remains: will emergency efforts succeed in limiting human losses, or will nature continue to have its harsh final say?
