Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese government has affirmed its need for World Bank support to assist approximately 600,000 citizens who have returned to their areas, amidst the economic, humanitarian, and service-related challenges facing many of these regions following the residents’ return.

Infrastructure

The authorities explained that the return of such a large number of citizens places additional strain on infrastructure and essential services, particularly in areas where facilities have been damaged or where there is a shortage of resources and capabilities.

Urgent health and education needs

Basic needs include the provision of health and educational services and the rehabilitation of water, electricity, and road networks, alongside support for municipalities and local authorities that bear a significant share of the burden of receiving returnees and meeting their needs.

Beirut seeks financial support.

The Lebanese government emphasized the importance of securing financial and technical support from the World Bank and international institutions to help accelerate recovery efforts and improve living conditions for returning residents. These calls come as Lebanon faces significant economic and financial challenges, making international aid a crucial factor in supporting reconstruction efforts and bolstering the state’s capacity to provide essential services to citizens. The authorities affirmed that supporting areas where residents have returned is a necessary step toward consolidating stability and encouraging more families to return, while ensuring the conditions necessary for a safe and stable life.
