Tripoli, Libya – Khaled al-Mahjoub, Director of Moral Guidance for the Libyan Army, asserted that the assassination of the Director of Military Intelligence represents a desperate attempt by terrorist groups to prove their continued existence and destabilize the security situation in the country.
Al-Mahjoub stated that targeting a security official of this rank reveals the terrorist organizations’ desire to refocus attention on their activities. This comes after a decline in their ability to operate and carry out impactful operations in recent times.
Pursuing those involved in acts of violence
He emphasized that the Libyan army and security services possess the capability to confront terrorist threats, affirming the continued efforts to pursue those involved in acts of violence and prevent them from regrouping.
He explained that combating terrorism requires broad security cooperation and coordination among various Libyan institutions.
Furthermore, international efforts aimed at cutting off funding sources for armed groups and preventing the movement of terrorist elements across borders must be supported.
Libya and ongoing security challenges
The Libyan army indicated that the recent operation would not achieve its perpetrators’ objectives. It also affirmed that military and security institutions would continue working to maintain the country’s security and pursue those responsible for the attacks.
Libya faces ongoing security challenges due to the proliferation of weapons and the multiplicity of armed groups. Consequently, there is a pressing need to unify security and military institutions and strengthen stability. This aims to prevent extremist groups from exploiting the political and security divisions.
