Kyiv – Diplomatic sources have revealed ongoing arrangements for an “anticipated” summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Obviously, by May 2026, Kyiv is attempting to penetrate the wall of “Slovak reservation” to reactivate political communication channels. The upcoming meeting aims not only for bilateral cooperation but is considered a serious attempt to resolve deep disagreements over military support and sanction terms, amidst Fico’s policy of “cautious balance” regarding the Ukrainian crisis.
“Energy Security and Economy”: Thorny Issues Awaiting Resolution
Media reports stated that both sides are coordinating a meeting date to discuss energy security and cross-border economic cooperation. Accordingly, the Ukrainian side views this meeting as an opportunity to reduce the divergence in positions, especially since Slovakia is a strategic neighbor and a vital corridor for supplies. Clearly, Zelensky wants to mobilize Bratislava back into the supportive European fold, while Fico insists on prioritizing “Slovak national interests,” adding a complex dimension to the expected dialogue.
“Restoring Trust”: Can Diplomacy Succeed in Easing Tensions?
Observers believe that holding this summit, if completed, would represent a significant shift toward calming the political front between the two nations. As a result, European circles hope the meeting will contribute to creating more effective regional coordination to face the consequences of the ongoing war. Amidst the anticipation, the question remains: will Zelensky succeed in persuading Fico to change his compass, or will Slovakia’s “political realism” remain an obstacle to any genuine rapprochement?
