Buenos Aires, Argentina – Lionel Messi, the captain of the Argentine national team, broke his silence for the first time after losing the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, sending an emotional message to the fans after the dream of retaining the title was lost.
The Argentine national team lost the final match by one goal to nil, in the match that brought the two teams together at the “MetLife” stadium, so “Tango” had to settle for second place.
After the match, Messi appeared affected by the defeat, before posting a message on his official Instagram account, in which he confirmed that the bitterness of the loss would take a long time to overcome.
The captain of the Argentine national team said: “The pain is great, and this wound will need time to heal, but I also hold on to all the wonderful moments we lived through, the matches in which we fought until the end, and all the work and effort this team has put in to bring Argentina back to the top of world football”.
He added: “It may be difficult now to realize the magnitude of what we have achieved, but reaching the World Cup final twice in a row is an achievement to be proud of. I thank everyone who supported us and stood by our side. We have united once again as one country, and this is something I will always be grateful for”.
At the end of his message, Messi made sure to congratulate the Spanish national team, wishing them success after winning the world title, in a gesture that received widespread praise across social media platforms.
