Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentine President Javier Pellegrini has declared a national holiday to celebrate the Argentine national team’s achievement, despite their loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
The Argentinian national team lost the final match 1-0, settling for the silver medal after a remarkable run in the tournament. This came after their victory in the previous edition.
The Argentine government explained in an official statement that the date of the national holiday will be determined in coordination with the national team players and coaching staff. This will be in accordance with the timing of the celebrations planned after the team’s return to the country.
The statement read: “Given the anticipated celebrations of the Argentine national team’s achievement, the day of the celebration will be declared a national holiday, with the date to be determined after coordination with the players and the coaching staff.”
The Argentine national team is scheduled to leave the United States on Monday evening, en route to Buenos Aires. However, not all members of the team will return together.
The Argentine Football Association explained that a number of players will travel directly from the United States to other destinations to rejoin their clubs or begin their vacations. The rest of the delegation, including the coaching staff and several players, will return to Argentina. They are expected to arrive in Buenos Aires at 5:00 PM local time.
Despite losing the title, Argentina received widespread praise at home for reaching the World Cup final for the second consecutive time. This achievement reflects their continued presence among the world’s elite teams.
