Rome, Italy – The Italian Foreign Minister described Russia’s decision to expel the Italian military attaché and one of his aides as a “retaliatory act.” He emphasized that the Russian move does not contribute to easing tensions between the two countries, but rather further complicates diplomatic relations at this time.
The Minister explained that the Italian government is closely monitoring developments. He indicated that Rome will continue to defend its national interests and the rights of its diplomatic missions in accordance with international law and norms. Furthermore, Italy reserves the right to take whatever measures it deems appropriate in response to the Russian decision.
He added that Italian authorities consider this measure part of a series of escalating tensions between Moscow and several European countries. This comes amid ongoing political and security disputes related to the war in Ukraine and its repercussions on relations between Russia and the West.
The Italian Foreign Minister affirmed that his country will continue to coordinate with its European partners and allies regarding recent developments.
