Kathmandu, Nepal – Official data released in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, indicates that more than 250 people lost their lives and thousands of families were directly affected by over 5,000 diverse disaster incidents across Nepal between April 14 and August 21, 2026. According to reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the country experienced a total of 5,014 disaster events. These included both natural and man-made disasters during this four-month period, resulting in significant human and material losses.

Details of human losses and nature of accidents

These scattered incidents resulted in 250 deaths, with eight people reported missing and 1,607 injured. The direct impact on Nepalese households reached approximately 6,272. Fires topped the list with 1,136 incidents, followed by 1,011 landslides and 1,010 snake bites. The agency also documented 480 instances of strong winds, 320 instances of heavy rainfall, 273 floods, and 245 lightning strikes. Other recorded disasters included 272 attacks by wild animals, 191 forest fires, and 59 cases of altitude sickness. In addition, there were four earthquakes, four hailstorms, two avalanches, and one boat capsizing.

The toll from the last few hours and the material losses

In its latest update covering the 24-hour period ending at 11:00 AM on August 21, the agency recorded 33 new disaster incidents. These incidents resulted in one death, one missing person, and 23 injuries, directly impacting 145 people. The estimated material losses from these incidents amounted to approximately 972,000 Nepalese rupees. Furthermore, the incidents caused temporary road closures in two key locations, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Nepalese authorities in managing and mitigating the risks of natural disasters.
