Tehran, Iran – Iran sent urgent letters to the President of the Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, condemning the ongoing US military attacks against it. Iran described these attacks as a “clear violation” of the UN Charter and other international obligations.
official Iranian complaint
In two separate letters, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations asserted that the United States had launched “large-scale military attacks” targeting Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Iran maintained that these operations constituted a direct violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter. Furthermore, it noted that they contravened Article 1 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
mutual escalation on the ground
This diplomatic move comes as the military confrontations entered their second day, with the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announcing an intensification of its strikes. It stated that it targeted approximately 90 strategic Iranian military sites. The list of targets destroyed by US forces included air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, and missile and drone storage sites. Additionally, naval capabilities and logistical infrastructure along the Iranian coast were targeted. In response, Tehran announced that it had retaliated against these strikes by launching missile attacks targeting US military bases in both Kuwait and Bahrain. In doing so, it attempted to establish a new deterrent equation amidst the escalating exchange of fire.
Increasing human losses
On the humanitarian front, the Iranian Ministry of Health announced a rise in the death toll from the US airstrikes over the past two days, reporting 14 deaths and 78 injuries. There is also growing anticipation regarding the evolving situation on the ground, as air raid sirens continue to sound and military activity reaches the halls of the United Nations.
This Iranian move reflects Tehran’s desire to internationalize the crisis and exert pressure through diplomatic channels to curb American attacks. In contrast, Washington affirms its determination to neutralize Iranian military capabilities, which it views as a direct threat to its interests and bases in the region. All eyes remain on the UN Security Council, amid questions about the organization’s ability to contain this dangerous escalation, which threatens the stability of the Gulf.
