Bogota, Colombia – Three workers were injured in a drone attack targeting an airport in Colombia, in a new security escalation that has raised concerns about the increasing use of drones by armed groups.
Colombian authorities reported that the drones exploded within the airport perimeter, injuring three employees. Some facilities and infrastructure were also damaged. However, no passengers were injured, and air traffic was not completely disrupted.
Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the airport, and bomb disposal teams and other specialists began a wide-scale sweep to ensure there were no other explosive devices. Simultaneously, the Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation to identify those responsible for the attack.
The Colombian government condemned the attack, emphasizing that targeting civilian facilities poses a direct threat to the security of its citizens. It also stated that security forces would pursue those involved and bring them to justice, while simultaneously strengthening security measures at airports and other vital facilities.
This attack comes amidst ongoing security challenges in Colombia. Armed groups and criminal networks are active in several regions, and there are growing concerns about the increasing use of explosive-laden drones in attacks targeting infrastructure and vital facilities.
