Beijing, China – Severe flooding in several parts of China has sparked panic. The floods caused the escape of approximately 900 snakes from a breeding farm, including highly venomous species, most notably cobras. This prompted authorities to launch a large-scale search and rescue operation and issue warnings to protect residents.
Local authorities reported that the powerful torrents swept through the farm, causing extensive damage. As a result, cages collapsed, releasing hundreds of snakes into the surrounding areas. Emergency and rescue teams, along with wildlife experts, were deployed to contain the snakes and recapture them before they reached residential areas.
Authorities confirmed that specialized teams have recovered a large number of snakes. However, the search continues for the remaining snakes using specialized equipment and under strict precautionary measures to prevent injuries. This is especially important because some of the escaped species are among the most dangerous venomous snakes.
Authorities urged residents to avoid flood-affected areas and to immediately report any snake sightings. They also stressed the importance of not attempting to capture the snakes, for their own safety and the safety of rescue teams.
This incident comes amidst a wave of heavy rains and flooding affecting several Chinese provinces. This wave has caused significant material losses and prompted authorities to raise their level of preparedness to address the consequences of the weather conditions. These measures also aim to mitigate the risks to the population.
