Dakar, Senegal – Sadio Mane, captain of the Senegalese national team and star of Saudi club Al-Nassr, has brought his international career to a close. This comes after he announced his retirement from representing his country following the Lions of Teranga’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
Mane’s decision came after the Senegalese team was eliminated from the World Cup competitions, following its loss to Belgium (3-2) in the round of 32. Thus, one of the most prominent African football stars ends a long career that lasted for years in the shirt of his country’s national team.
Mane issued an official statement, in which he sent an emotional message to the Senegalese fans. In it, he expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his career, stressing that he did everything in his power to defend the colors of his country.
Mane said in the statement, as reported by the Senegalese newspaper “Le Quotidien”: “I know that I have given everything I have for this flag, and I have sacrificed everything for Senegal, and I have spared no effort to make our people happy”.
He added: “The fans’ support and trust in me was a source of strength and motivation to achieve everything we have accomplished, and I will always be grateful for this relationship that will remain firmly rooted in my heart”.
Mane did not rule out serving Senegalese football, confirming that his journey with the national team would not end with his retirement. He also indicated his desire to pass on his experience to future generations.
He explained: “I will proudly put my experience at the service of my country, whether through working within the technical staff, as a coach, or through any administrative role that serves the future of football in Senegal. Long live Senegal”.
Mane is considered one of the most prominent players in the history of the Senegalese national team, having contributed to many achievements. He was one of the main pillars of the “Tiranga Lions” over the past years, before concluding his international career by announcing his retirement after the 2026 World Cup.
