Tehran, Iran – Qatari negotiators are in the Iranian capital, Tehran, for talks with Iranian officials in an effort to reduce tensions with the United States and pave the way for a resumption of broader negotiations. This move is being coordinated with Washington, according to a well-informed source.
Qatari mediation to contain the crisis
The source explained that the talks are focused on mechanisms for implementing the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding.
In addition, the issues that led to the latest escalation between the two sides are being discussed, primarily the disputes concerning freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Qatari move comes within the framework of diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing the crisis from widening and maintaining communication channels between Washington and Tehran.
Escalation puts pressure on the path to de-escalation
These efforts coincided with escalating military tensions, after the Iranian news agency Mehr reported hearing explosions in Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, and Konarak in southern Iran.
Simultaneously, Iranian armed forces launched attacks on US military infrastructure in neighboring Gulf states. This came in response to US strikes targeting sites in southern and eastern Iran.
These developments cast a shadow over the ceasefire agreement reached three weeks prior, raising renewed concerns about the collapse of the de-escalation process.
The Strait of Hormuz is the focus of the dispute
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy asserted that the US strikes and what it described as Washington’s interference in directing shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz have hindered the gradual reopening of the waterway.
The Revolutionary Guard added that the movement of ships under Iranian supervision has increased to approximately 50% of pre-war levels over the past two weeks.
It also indicated that passage permits are granted only to ships adhering to routes designated by Tehran, as diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate tensions and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
