Gaza, Palestine – In a statement reflecting continued tensions on the ground despite ceasefire declarations, the Israeli army announced on Sunday the targeted killing of two field commanders in Hamas’s military wing in the Gaza Strip. This action was part of a series of what it described as “precise” strikes.
Targeting the “elite” leadership
The Israeli military spokesperson explained that the operation resulted in the deaths of Muhammad Najib Ashour, a platoon commander in Hamas’s elite unit, and Tamer Saeed Abu Nakhl, who led a military cell within the movement’s armed wing. According to the military statement, both men were involved in planning attacks against Israeli forces and posed what the statement described as a “direct and immediate threat” to soldiers, necessitating their targeted killing.
Despite announcing the operation, the Israeli military refrained from disclosing further details regarding the precise timing or location of the strike within the Gaza Strip. The military merely confirmed that Southern Command forces remain deployed in their current operational areas. It also indicated that they will continue their military operations against any “immediate threats” they encounter in the field.
Fragile ceasefire
These developments on the ground come amid uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire agreement reached in October 2015. This agreement was based on an American initiative presented by President Donald Trump. Its core provisions stipulated a complete end to the war and the launch of a comprehensive reconstruction process for the Gaza Strip.
However, the reality on the ground paints a completely different picture; Israel continues to launch airstrikes and artillery bombardments on a near-regular basis against various areas in Gaza. These ongoing operations result in daily casualties and further devastate the already fragile infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Gaza is experiencing a dire humanitarian crisis that is worsening with the continuation of restrictions and military strikes. This makes the reconstruction aspirations promised by the ceasefire plan increasingly unattainable as the cycle of violence persists. The international community is watching with concern these repeated violations, which threaten the complete collapse of the fragile agreements and are pushing the Strip toward further instability and deteriorating living conditions.
