Madrid, Spain – Atletico Madrid began their campaign in the new Spanish League season with a 2-0 victory over Malaga, in the match that brought the two teams together on Wednesday evening as part of the first round of competitions.
The first half ended in a goalless draw, before Atletico Madrid managed to break the deadlock during the second half of the match.
South Korean Lee Kang-in put the home side ahead in the 70th minute, scoring his first goal for the team in his debut appearance in the Spanish league.
Alex Baena extended Atletico Madrid’s lead in the 85th minute, adding the second goal to secure the three points for the Spanish capital team at the start of their campaign in the competition.
The match saw the absence of Argentine Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid’s squad, amid ongoing controversy regarding his future and the possibility of his departure from the team during the current summer transfer window.
Atletico Madrid are preparing to continue their journey in the Spanish League when they host Villarreal on August 23, as part of the second round of matches.
